The story
Warrior Cricket makes English willow bats by hand at a workshop and shop in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The name goes back to Richard Wensley, a former Slazenger craftsman who left to start his own bat company. In 2005, as he neared retirement, IF Cricket, a firm set up by another former Slazenger bat maker and a business partner, took over his workshop and adopted the Warrior name.
The current master bat maker began at Slazenger's Horbury factory in 1972, aged 15. Each bat is shaped by hand from grade 1 English willow, which the site says takes about four hours from cleft to finished bat. The range has three senior models at £300 plus junior versions. Warrior also runs a repair service that other UK retailers send work to, with a five-day turnaround.
