The story

Kookaburra began in Melbourne in 1890, when AG Thompson, a saddler and harness maker born in Cambridgeshire, set up in business. It traded as AG Thompson Pty Ltd, using Kookaburra as a product name, before adopting Kookaburra Sport as its trading name in 1990. The company says it is still owned by the Thompson family, with fourth and fifth generations working at the Melbourne head office.

The firm is best known for cricket and hockey balls, and in 2002 it bought the English ball maker Alfred Reader & Co. Its UK business trades as Kookaburra Reader Ltd. A bat maker joined the Melbourne team in 2016 to look after sponsored players, and UK buyers on some models can choose a weight that the bat maker then hand-selects.

Willow English willow (grade stated per bat, e.g. Players Grade).
