The story

Newbery traces its bat-making back to Len Newbery in East Sussex in the early 1900s. His son John set up John Newbery Ltd in 1981 and became known for experimental designs such as the steel spring handle. He died in 1989, and lines like the Master and Mjolnir carried the name through the 1990s and 2000s.

The business is now based in West Sussex. In 2024 it began a five-year plan that adds cricket balls and teamwear alongside its handmade English willow bats, and it supplies balls to the England and Wales Cricket Board. For 2026 it has moved to a simple numbered willow grading system.
